Whether you show us an idea sketch, a random reference photo, or a rough idea description, our artists work with you to develop that inspiration into a tattoo designed specifically for both seasoned collectors and first-time clients. Our Bloomington, MN studio doubles as an art gallery, showcasing work from local and international artists—including pieces by Ylli Haruni, a close friend of our founder, Daniel Natural.

Our studio is professional and comfortable, with an atmosphere that encourages conversation and creativity. We want clients to have the time to discuss their ideas, ask questions, and understand the artistic process before moving forward. Collaborative Custom Tattooing​

 

Ocean Blue is built on clear communication and genuine collaboration. During the consultation process, clients have an opportunity to discuss their ideas, references, placement, size, style, and other important details. Daniel Natural, founder of Ocean Blue Tattoo & Art Studio, listens to the story behind your tattoo idea and develops a foundational design mockup that aligns with your vision. He will suggest which artist's skills best suit the project. From there, our artist refines the concept and prepares it for tattooing. This collaborative approach allows us to match each project with an artist whose experience and artistic strengths complement the design.

Custom Tattoo Styles​​

 

Many clients come to us with a memory they want to preserve. Others want to represent a person, place, experience, or important transitions in their lives. Sometimes the starting point is simply a visual idea that needs an artist's perspective to bring it together. Our Bloomington tattoo artists work across a diverse range of styles, allowing us to approach each project according to the artwork.

Our specialties include watercolor tattoos, fine-line work, dot work and stippling, anime, realism, 3D tattoos, geometric tattoos, floral/ botanical tattoos, and illustrative work.

Each style requires a different understanding of composition, line, color, texture, contrast, and negative space. Just as importantly, a tattoo must be designed for the body's shape and movement.

Our artists consider these elements throughout the design process so the finished piece feels intentional both as artwork and as a tattoo.

 

•  Watercolor & Illustrative:   They are expressive qualities of fine art, with illustrative tattooing bridging the gap between traditional fine art mediums - like pen-and-ink sketches, woodcut etchings, storybook drawings, and watercolors. Rather than prioritizing photo-realistic depth or rigid traditional tattoo rules, illustrative tattoos emphasize style, expression, and artistic technique directly inspired by paper-based art forms. Watercolor tattoos use flowing color, soft gradients, layered washes,  fluidity, and artistic movement.

• Anime and character:   They bring favorite characters, stories, and personalities to life through detailed, expressive artwork. This style can feature bold color, dynamic poses, and recognizable character details, ranging from vibrant anime-inspired pieces to characters from games, comics, movies, and pop culture.

• Realism & Black-and-Grey:  Using different values of black and grey to create smooth transitions, detail, depth, texture, and dimension. Careful shading and highlights give the tattoo a natural sense of depth while preserving important details and a realistic look.

• Fine-Line & Botanical: Use delicate, precise linework to create a clean and understated appearance, while botanical designs often follow the natural shape and flow of the body. Depending on the design, you can add subtle dot work or soft shading for depth without making the tattoo feel heavy.

• Geometric & Dot Work / Stippling: Complex patterns, symmetry, and detailed shading. The spacing and density of the dots create unique values

•  Neo-traditional: evolving classic American Traditional style by blending its iconic bold outlines with intricate details, rich color palettes, and smooth, modern shading.​
