AFTERCARE

 Tattoo Care with "Derm Shield"

Derm Shield by “Recovery” is a vegan-friendly, dye-free product for healing fresh tattoos. It is a transparent, soothing, breathable, and water-resistant bandage designed to keep contaminants away from the fresh tattoo. Derm Shield will protect your new tattoo and help prevent fading and flaking/scabbing while allowing you to shower and perform everyday activities without fear of contamination or infection.  It also drastically reduces healing time and discomfort. There are also similar products like tattoo-derm, Tegaderm, and Saniderm. We found that the "derm shield" is thinner than others and stays on the skin better.

  • A day after getting a tattoo, ink and plasma may be trapped underneath the wrap, and you won’t be able to see the tattoo clearly. This is normal. To continue to protect your tattoo, we will re-wrap that bandage for you at our studio. If you have an extra wrap, you may change the wrap yourself. First, gently wipe it with Listerine or soap and rinse it with water. Before re-wrapping your tattoo with Derm Shield dab dry with a paper towel or allow to air dry completely. Do not apply lotion or ointment before re-wrapping the tattoo.

  • Leave the new wrap in place for 4 or 5 more days. You can take showers with it and practice daily activities without worrying about infection. Do not swim or soak in a bath for three weeks until the tattoo is healed. Avoid working out for the first 3 days.

  • After the 5th day, you may remove the wrap and clean the tattoo again. We strongly recommend removing it during or after a hot shower. It will help to loosen up the adhesive, allowing for easy removal. Use soap to clean any residue.

  • After removing the bandage, dab the tattooed area with Listerine twice daily until the tattoo is completely healed. Apply a small amount of Hustle Butter or unscented lotion sparingly for a few days. Do not use too much lotion, which can suffocate the tattoo and increase healing time.

  • If you have excess swelling or redness, you can apply a cold pack to decrease swelling and inflammation.

If you are unable to re-wrap the tattoo yourself and are unable to return to the shop to get it re-wrapped, remove the tattoo wrap after
24 hours, and follow the instructions below. If you have sensitive skin or are allergic to bandages, we recommend a product called
“Armor Gel”.  This is an excellent product for people with healing issues or sensitive skin. All products listed are available to purchase online. Contact with any questions or concerns, we are happy to help.

 Traditional Care (without "Derm Shield")

  • Remove the bandage after 24 hours.

  • Gently wash with warm water and antibacterial soap or Listerine 3-5 times per day for 2 weeks

  • Do not scrub tattoo to dry, instead blot gently with a clean paper towel.

  • Apply a very thin layer of Hustle Butter or Aquaphor each time the tattoo is cleaned for 3 weeks after receiving the tattoo.

  • Flaking and itchy skin is expected as the tattoo heals. Instead of scratching an itchy tattoo, gently slap or tap the surrounding area to let natural flaking or peeling occur.

Do not touch it with unwashed hands while the tattoo is fresh and uncovered.
Avoid swimming or taking baths for 3 weeks while the tattoo heals completely. (Showering is fine)
Avoid working out for 3 days after receiving a tattoo.
Avoid direct sunlight while the tattoo is healing.
